    Your view is from the old school and out-dated.
    In the world of modern statistics, computing skill is playing more important role than ever.
    Take a look at websites of J. Friedman @ stanford and B. Ripley @ oxford. They all are world-class statisticians and also have top-notch computing skills.
  • in my view, a general-purpose scripting language, such as python or perl, can be used to do data processing or reporting instead of SAS.
    R alone can not replace SAS. However, a combination of several open-source languages is able to take care of 80-90% of major functionality in SAS.
