Centre for Translational Bioinformatics, Queen Mary, University of London
China Scholarship Council Research Opportunities
If you are interested in working with scientists and clinicians to apply bioinformatics to biomedical data at the leading edge between health and technology, you might like to work with us? The Centre for Translational Bioinformatics, within the William Harvey Research Institute at QMUL are offering to host a limited number of excellent students through the China Scholarship Council programme (http://en.csc.edu.cn/; see details at http://www.csc.edu.cn/require/download.asp?PROJECTCODE=200041) and similar research programmes. We are interested in hearing from postdoctoral researchers, visiting PhD students and QMUL-registered PhD Students in a broad range of bioinformatics fields including: Genetics and Genomics, Next generation sequence analysis, systems biology, drug discovery, pharmacogenetics, software and algorithm development. Please see our website for a description of the lab research interests (www.smd.qmul.ac.uk/bioinf/)

To be considered for a position in our lab you should have good experience in bioinformatics analysis, programming or software development. It would also be an advantage to have knowledge of one or more of the following programming languages: C++, Perl, Python, Java or R.
We can support your application to the CSC, but you will need to be successful in obtaining funding from the CSC. Once this is achieved your tuition fees at QMUL will be free through an agreement between QMUL and the CSC.
Our laboratory is highly networked across the UK and Europe, with active collaborations with the Innovative Medicines Initiative, Open PHACTS project (www.openphacts.org), the eTRIKs project (www.etriks.org) and the MRC Farr Institute London (http://www.farrinstitute.org/). We are also leading Informatics for three MRC Stratified Medicine programmes (www.mrc.ac.uk/research/initiatives/stratified-medicine). This is a unique opportunity to be part of a new and enthusiastic team and a wider diverse community of research scientists, clinicians, bioinformaticians and IT experts.
Specific requirements for a successful application to the CSC:
The CSC requires good written and oral English. For visiting students, each subject of IELTS >=5.5. No Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) is needed for VISA. QMUL will not charge tuition fees under the CSC scheme. Our Centre will charge a fixed bench fee of £1000 (although this may be negotiable). Affordable accommodation is usually available at the Charterhouse Square site. For applying PhD student, the English level of IELTS is 6.5 (http://www.qmul.ac.uk/international/international-students/englishlanguagerequirements/index.html). Please check the QMUL website for other requirements for PhD student.
