The University of Auckland (UA) and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) will jointly award up to 20 scholarships to students from PR China who intend to read for a PhD degree at UA in year 2007.
For successful applicants, UA will waive their annual tuition fees and CSC will consider their application for an annual living allowance, for up to 4 years, for an amount prescribed from time to time by the Chinese Government (which includes Overseas Student Health Cover), a return airfare to New Zealand by the most economical route, and student visa fees.
Areas for PhD Research
UA and CSC specifiy six priority areas for this Programme, which may be reviewed annually:
- Telecommunication and Information Technology
- Life Science and Public Health
- Material Science and New Material
- Energy and Environment
- Engineering, including Biomedical Engineering
- Applied Social Sciences and WTO-related Areas (e.g. Economics)
Eligibility
- Candidates will be citizens and permanent residents of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application;
- Candidates must not be currently working or studying abroad;
- Successful candidates must return to China upon completion of their studies and/or research;
- Candidates will be recruited from leading Chinese universities of science and academia and shall be of outstanding merit and research potential;
- Candidates must hold an unconditional offer of admission to pursue a PhD degree at UA. They must therefore fulfill the relevant academic entry requirements set by the admitting department, including a high level of English language proficiency;
- Candidates should be intending to pursue PhD degree in one of the priority academic areas identified by UA and CSC. However, applicants to other study/research areas will also be considered. The support academic areas are also subject to the availability of relevant programmes of study at UA, as published in its Graduate Studies Prospectus;
- Candidate should satisfy the selection criteria set out by CSC by completing the CSC Application Form and the CSC Employer Reference Form at
http://apply.csc.edu.cn/.
Application Process and Time Scale
- Candidates should directly apply for admission to UA before a set application deadline, i.e. Friday November 17 2006. Online admission applications are preferred and are available at
http://www.auckland.ac.nz/uoa/about/international/ (click on ‘Apply Now’ under Quick Links). Candidates should first review the Auckland website, including faculty staff research interests and PhD fields of study listed under the School of Graduate Studies. They are also advised to contact / email the appropriate department/ faculty to identify prospective research topics and a PhD supervisor.
- Simultaneously, candidates must also complete an application for funding and employer reference to CSC (forms are available online at
http://apply.csc.edu.cn). A hard copy of the signed CSC Application Form along with the completed CSC Employer Reference Form and a copy of the full application to UA, including supporting documentation, must be submitted to CSC by a set deadline, i.e. Friday November 17, 2006.
- By mid December 2006, UA will provide CSC with a ranked list of suitable candidates (names and subject areas) to be considered for the scholarship programme and a copy of the admissions offer letters for each candidate put forward.
- By early January 2007, CSC will evaluate the listed candidates according to CSC requirements and priorities, and provide UA with a shortlist of potential scholarship recipients.
- By February 2007, UA and CSC will announce the final list of scholarship recipients.
- Successful applicants will start their PhD study at UA in March 2007.
