Search Metrics, Staff Data Mining Analyst
Job Responsibilities
eBay Search Metrics is building world-class engineering teams in Shanghai,
focusing on search related systems and services such as user behavior/intent
analytics and crowd sourcing judgments. The team’s work will directly impact
eBay revenue by improving both search engine performance and user
experience on eBay.
We are seeking a data mining analyst to provide applied research and data
modeling expertise in this area. This is an exciting position, providing the
candidate an opportunity to solve web scale and high impact business problems
in the search engine space using statistical methodologies , data modeling,
machine learning and information retrieval.
• Work with business and analytics partners to support overall eBay business
optimization;
• Apply advanced statistical/econometric modeling tools to develop robust
predicative models to support business initiatives;
• Conduct and manage applied research and modeling work in the areas of
query analysis, user behavior/intent analysis, and search engine measurement.
• Research and experiment with data mining algorithms for query
segmentation and dynamic segment expansion.
• Utilize data mining technologies and various data sources like eBay web
usage logs, search query terms, human judgment data from crowd sourcing
platform, and 3rd party data, to gain insight into Internet user behavior and
intent that will set the foundation for eBay search engine services.
• Provide complete solutions to business problems using data mining
techniques, statistics and data analysis.
• Serve as subject matter expert and drive thought leadership in the areas of
identifying search engine improvement needs, measurement and supporting
release decisions for new algorithms.
• Mentoring and coaching junior staffs, driving internal operational
excellence, and developing career for the team
.
Job Requirements
• MS degree or PhD (preferred) in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics,
or equivalent is required for this position
• At least 5 year experience in areas of advanced reporting and data mining.
Solid understanding of descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, regression and
variance analysis, classification and clustering, factor analysis, model selection,
etc.
• Expertise with applying predictive modeling techniques, machine learning,
statistics and information retrieval methods to real-world data
• Superior communications skills, both verbal and written in English and
Chinese
• Ability to work independently and in a team to research innovative
solutions to challenging business problems
• Attention to detail and data accuracy.
• Extensive experience with large data sets and data manipulation.
• Hands on with SQL, Oracle or Teredata, R or SAS is a must. Experience with
python/perl/Hadoop is preferred. Working experience or knowledge of search
engine, information retrieval is preferred.

• Work with business and analytics partners to support overall eBay business
optimization;
• Monitor closely the health of a group of metrics on each round of
experimentation.
• Design, optimize and automate metrics reporting process.
• Study the interaction among a group of metrics by conducting correlation,
regression and other modeling effort.
• Perform on-demand metrics calculation and analysis work.
Job Requirements
• Bachelor or MS degree (preferred) in Computer Science, Statistics,
Mathematics, or equivalent is required for this position
• At least 2 year experience in areas of advanced reporting and data mining..
Solid understanding of descriptive statistics, visualization, hypothesis testing,
regression and variance analysis, etc.
• Good communications skills, both verbal and written in English and

• Quick learner, self-motivated and passionate.
• Familiar with Excel, SQL, R or SAS. Experience in Oracle/Teradata,
