For example, if you break right after "a" in an assignment of "a=1", then the first line "a" itself is a complete and meaningful S expression (which tells R to evaluate the variable a). And this is not what you want obviously. On the other hand, if you break right after the "=" sign, then the first line "a=" will not be complete, so that R knows that the next line should be concatenated with the first line before evaluation.
